It’s Not Easy Being Green

On top of everything else I need to do (work, grocery shop, bills, pack lunches, pick up, drop off, cook dinner, etc) I’m supposed to also be environmentally friendly.

I want to be green and environmentally friendly! Really! I have a Bachelor’s degree in environment studies to prove it. In college I was an intern at the Sierra Club. I met my husband canoeing across Michigan. I recycle. I use renewable containers instead of disposable plastic bags.

But with life so busy (and so hectic) I’m always thinking I’m never green enough.

For years I’ve heard about natural cleaning products but I’ve never paused long enough to get Use Green Cleaning Supplies onto my to do list.

Until Now (I Think)

I recently partnered with Mom Bloggers Club to review Green Works cleaning products and now have four different cleaning products that are noteworthy green.

They are noteworthy because Green Works products are “plant and mineral based, come from biodegradable ingredients that are naturally derived, are not tested on animals, and use environmentally sustainable packaging (whenever possible).”

From a busy green conscious mom’s perspective, that all sounds really good, right?

At a high level, I’ve enjoyed all of the Green Works products I received to review. I like the branding and the marketing. More importantly, I like how I feel mindful about the environment when I’m using these products.

They make me FEEL like a more green conscious mom…and hopefully this feeling will rollover to other parts of my life when I’m NOT cleaning (or looking at the cheerful green containers).

Looking at the Ingredients

But when my husband and I tried to get into the weeds, to look at the ingredients and compare Green Works products to the other products we currently use around our house, it wasn’t easy to make a one to one comparison.

The Green Works laundry detergent, for example has “plant-based cleaning agents” and the detergent we already had in our house has “biodegradable cleaning agents”.

GreenWorks.com states that at the time they were created the brand “there was no industry standard for natural” so they looked at some existing definitions and set the bar even higher.

As I use these products, I will do some research to see if there is currently an industry standard for green products. Who knows, by the time my research is over, I just may be using simple baking soda to clean my tiolets and vinegar  as my all-purpose cleaner.

Thank You Green Works
