I walked into a yoga retail shop today and I saw a large sign that said…
Do One Thing That Scares You Every Day This Year!
Just reading that bold request – to jump out of my comfort zone each and every day – scared me. The entire concept sounded absolutely exhausting.
But here I sit, writing my first blog post for 2010, and I’m eager and excited to take on the challenge of doing one thing every day that scares me. I think my biggest challenge will simply be remembering to add this to my daily routine.
I’m not going to judge the things that scare me. I’m going to be aware of them and observe them and honor them.
Today, the one thing I did that scared me was talk about nursing homes and long term insurance needs for myself and family members. Nursing homes scared me when I was a young child when I went to visit my grandparents. Earlier this week, however, I had an amazing experience at a nursing home when I visited my 90 year cousin at her’s when I was in Michigan visiting family.
To be honest though, nursing homes still scare me. I hugged my parents (who are 84 years old and 72 years old) tonight and told them they had one job to do – to stay healthy.
Cheers to a healthy and happy new year and to doing one thing that scares you every day this year!
Love, Stacey

[…] I hope this story inspires you to jump into something uncertain as well. Something you can´t figure out before you do it. Something scary and yet fascinating. […]
Excellent thinking, Stacey.
What scares me after reading your post is how rarely I do things that scare me. More the converse – the things I do scare others. 🙂
Thanks for this gentle jolt. It’s given me real food for thought.
Best, Robin

Great suggestion Stacey, doing this is a powerful way to accomplish greater and greater things. I actually find that fear starts to disappear when you really step out of your comfort zone a lot. It almost becomes an anxiousness instead of fear when taking on some new challenge. One can learn to almost feed off of it. Its like adrenaline. I guess that is still fear though in a way.

I practice olympic lifting as a sport and for my fitness and man, it’s always scary lifting heavy and for a personal best even though your successful. But it feels sooooooo good accomplishing the lift.
Stacey,
That part that scares me…is the part of that that says “every day”. Bold, most definitely! And a great way to step outside of comfort zones. Still…the thought of doing something that scares me…every day…wow! I love the concept, and I’m also feeling a bit of “can I really do that…every day”…

Robin – I invite you to do more things that scare you and to enjoy the process of discovery.
Mike – I agree, the fear does weaken, which allows you to live the life you want to lead without fear getting in the way.
Jake – Happy new year to you too!
Hayden – It’s been a very powerful exercise for me…and it makes me feel very ALIVE!
Josue – Thanks for sharing what you do every day that scares you.
Lance – I agree. The thought of doing something every day that scares me sounds scary. But so far, I have felt so ALIVE and authentic facing my scary moments. The scary things don’t always have to be large. Sometimes, it can just be acknowledging a thought that you have not wanted to face. Happy New Year!!
Dear Stacey,
I just LOVE LOVE LOVE this.
Just FANTASTIC Stacey.
I am a strong advocate of doing and facing what scares us. We are never fully whole, alive or free when we don’t face our fear. I just put a line in a video that I will post today that says, “I refused to be defined by my fear.” I am always doing emotional, physical, mental and spiritual things that force me to face any fear. As a result I have little fear. And I thrive on how facing fear not only sets me free but it wakes me up and gives me FIRSTHAND Life experience…not just something I read in a book which “talks” about dealing with or facing fear. But actually DOING it.
A line I use in my book (about my life when I was younger in the Australian rainforest that will be out this year sometime), which goes something like this. “Ultimately we must experience Life ourselves to fully KNOW Life.”
This post rocks!! Thank you for writing it. You are the first person I’ve seen write about it other than myself. My readers are always hearing me talk about it. LOL!! So this did me a LOT of good. You are a gem. Hugs, Robin

Everyday? Does it not make our hyper acidity rise up? Lets rephrase it “do one thing that scares you every month”. I am definite the things you scared most doesn’t have to be very plenty and it will let you work at it for 12 months.
